WEB De Zerbi: "I would and will return"

Assistant Manager of Shakhtar Donetsk open to Serie A return

De Zerbi grew up at AC Milan, played for club and went on loan to Serie B and Serie C2 clubs.

WEB De Zerbi has confirmed his desire to coach in Italy amid links with AC Milan. The former Shakhtar Donetsk manager, who is currently an assistant at the club, spent four seasons on loan at lower division clubs in Italy, including Serie B and Serie C2. De Zerbi has previously expressed his gratitude to Milan for helping him develop as a player, and has said that he would be open to returning to the club in the future.

"I would and will return," De Zerbi said in an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. "I am grateful to Milan for how they raised me. One day, yes, but not now."

De Zerbi has been linked with the Milan job in recent weeks, following the sacking of Marco Giampaolo. The 40-year-old is seen as a potential long-term successor to Gennaro Gattuso, who left the club in May.

De Zerbi has a good track record in management, having won the Ukrainian Premier League title with Shakhtar in 2019. He also led the club to the semi-finals of the Europa League in the same year.

Whether De Zerbi will be offered the Milan job remains to be seen. However, his comments suggest that he would be interested in the role, and that he has a strong desire to return to Italy and coach in Serie A.
